1. Publisher Identity and Legal Status

The Canadian Journal of Forestry Research (CJFR) is published by the Mian Karam Ellahi Trust (MKET) Canada, a federally incorporated not‑for‑profit organization registered under the Canada Not‑for‑profit Corporations Act (S.C. 2009, c. 23), Corporation Number 1504027‑2. All CJFR publications are governed by MKET’s institutional publishing policies, metadata governance framework, and legal compliance obligations under Canadian federal law.

2. Copyright Ownership

2.1 Author Rights

Authors retain full copyright to their manuscripts, datasets, graphics, and supplementary materials. By submitting to CJFR, authors grant MKET Canada a non‑exclusive, irrevocable, worldwide license to:

  • Publish the work in CJFR

  • Archive the work in MKET’s institutional repositories

  • Deposit the work in Zenodo (OpenAIRE)

  • Assign persistent identifiers (DataCite DOIs and future Crossref DOIs)

  • Disseminate the work for scholarly, educational, and non‑commercial purposes

  • Preserve the work indefinitely through recognized digital preservation infrastructures

This license does not transfer ownership; authors remain the legal copyright holders.

3. Licensing Terms (Creative Commons)

All CJFR publications are released under:

Creative Commons Attribution‑NonCommercial‑NoDerivatives (CC BY‑NC‑ND 4.0)

This license allows users to:

  • Read, download, and share the work

  • Cite the work with proper attribution

  • Use the work for non‑commercial academic purposes

This license prohibits:

  • Commercial use

  • Modification or creation of derivative works

  • Removal of author attribution

  • Redistribution of altered versions

Authors may request alternative Creative Commons licenses subject to editorial approval.

4. DataCite, Zenodo, and DOI Preservation Rights

4.1 DataCite DOI Assignment

All CJFR publications deposited in Zenodo receive DataCite DOIs, ensuring:

  • Persistent identification

  • International interoperability

  • Metadata integrity

  • Long‑term preservation under the DataCite infrastructure

4.2 Zenodo Archival Rights

CJFR grants Zenodo (CERN/OpenAIRE) the right to:

  • Host CJFR publications

  • Preserve them indefinitely

  • Display metadata publicly

  • Provide open‑access distribution

Zenodo’s preservation rights operate under the author’s retained copyright.

4.3 Crossref DOI Governance (Upon Membership Approval)

Upon approval of MKET’s Crossref membership, CJFR will:

  • Assign Crossref DOIs to articles, issues, and volumes

  • Deposit Crossref‑compliant metadata

  • Maintain DOI resolution and landing pages

  • Comply with Crossref’s rules, regulations, and conflict‑reporting procedures

Crossref DOIs will coexist with DataCite DOIs for enhanced discoverability.

5. MKET Institutional Rights

MKET Canada retains the right to:

  • Publish CJFR content across MKET’s official websites

  • Maintain institutional repositories

  • Deposit CJFR content in Zenodo and other preservation systems

  • Register ISSNs and ISBNs for CJFR publications

  • Submit CJFR issues to Library and Archives Canada (LAC) under legal‑deposit obligations

  • Ensure long‑term accessibility and preservation of all CJFR materials

These rights are exercised solely for scholarly, educational, and non‑commercial purposes.

6. Library and Archives Canada (LAC) Legal Deposit Compliance

CJFR complies with the Library and Archives Canada (LAC) Legal Deposit Program for digital publications. Under this obligation, CJFR:

  • Deposits digital issues, volumes, and monographs with LAC

  • Provides metadata consistent with LAC’s national bibliographic standards

  • Ensures permanent preservation within Canada’s national archive

Legal deposit does not affect author copyright ownership.

7. ISSN and ISBN Protocol

CJFR follows international identification standards:

7.1 ISSN

CJFR will obtain an ISSN (online edition) through ISSN Canada (LAC). The ISSN identifies CJFR as a continuing serial publication.

7.2 ISBN

Special issues, monographs, annual compilations, and thematic volumes may receive ISBNs through ISBN Canada. ISBN assignment does not alter copyright ownership.

8. Author Responsibilities

Authors must ensure:

  • Originality of submitted work

  • Proper citation and attribution

  • Ethical compliance (including fieldwork approvals)

  • Accuracy of data and analysis

  • Permission for third‑party copyrighted materials

  • Disclosure of funding and conflicts of interest

Plagiarism, fabrication, or falsification will result in immediate rejection and possible retraction.

9. User Rights and Restrictions

Users may:

  • Access CJFR content freely

  • Download and share content for academic purposes

  • Cite CJFR publications with proper attribution

Users may not:

  • Modify or adapt CJFR content

  • Use CJFR content commercially

  • Remove author or publisher attribution

  • Redistribute altered versions

10. Disclaimer

CJFR and MKET Canada:

  • Do not guarantee the accuracy of external links

  • Are not liable for damages arising from use of published content

  • Do not endorse the views expressed by authors

  • Reserve the right to correct metadata, update DOIs, or revise landing pages

11. Governing Law

This Copyright Policy is governed by:

  • The laws of the Province of Ontario

  • The federal laws of Canada

  • International DOI Foundation (IDF) standards

  • DataCite and Crossref membership agreements

  • Library and Archives Canada legal‑deposit regulations
